10C Notes 11.15.11
-Radiation- transfer of heat from electro magnetic energy. An object that can be transfered to heat.
Example: Infared energy to thermal energy
-Convection- Transfer of heat by warm metter rising anf cool matter sinking, wind and ocean currents
Example: Convection in atmosphere and oceans
-Conduction- transfer of heat by direct touch. Heat always travels from warm to cooler areas, initail power of heat
-Gulf Stream Current, and California current ocean currents caused by winds and convection
Warm Water Currents
-More evaporation takes place
-Raises humidity (moistire in air)
-Raises overall temprature in the area
-Cloud cover causes little change in temprature from day to night.
Cool Water Currents
-Takes away heat from the land (conduction)
-lowers overall temperatures
-Colder and Direie conditions
-Lower humidity (moisture)
-Wide range of tempratures from day to night
Hurricanes
-Hurricanes are formed in low pressure systems over warm water
-Storms form over or near Africa
-As the mostiure is squeezed out of moist areas winds are formed then the winds start to rotate causing a low pressure system to form and then it starts to suck in.
-Due to the Coriolis effect the winds move counter clockwise
-Once winds get to 74 MPH classified from a tropical storm to a hurricane
Hurricane Katrina
-One of the strongest storms to impact the United States during the last 100 years
-Sustained winds during lanfall of 125 MPH (strong catagory 3)
-Eye- Lowest pressure on record (920 mb)
-Widespread devastation to U.S. cities such as New Orleans L.A., Mobile Al., and Gulf Port Ms.
