Map the Sea Floor 1.26.12
In the 1950's, four discoveries led to the development of plate tectonic theory. The first discovery came from using World War 1 sonar, or echo sound devices to map the ocean floor. What was once believed to be a flat ancient surface was determined to be young and rugged. Immense mountain ranges up to 4500 km high and 50,000 km long were mapped. Seismic data from the research ship, Atlantis, discovered the ocean floor was not thick as was previously believed, but was relatively thin.
Use the data from your grid map and cross section to draw a line graph that will show the surface of the seafloor in your model.

How is your method of using the dowel and peg board to map the surface in your seafloor box similar to sonar or echo sound devices used by the military to map the ocean floor?
They are similar because you can measure down. The dowel moves down and then you measure it, and so do the sound devices.
