Part 2: Marine Mess Lab
10.14.11
Name of Land Mass: Gilligan's Island
Name of Ocean: Deep Blue Sea
Record the following before human modifications:
1. Ocean water temperature: 73.9° F
2. Ocean Water pH: 7.5 on the pH scale
3. Percentage of ocean area impaired by pollution: 0%
4. Number of fish: 11 fish
5. Height of sea level: 2.7 CM high
Predict how your model will change after adding human modifications to the ocean systems caused by pollutionand climate change.
The fish will die because of the pollution, the pH level will decrease, the sea level will raise, and the temperature will raise.below,
In the space below, map and label your marine model.

Part 2: Marine Mess! Continued
Record the following information after human modification:
1. Ocean water temperature: 81° F
2. Ocean Water pH: 3.08 on the pH scale
3. Percentage of ocean area impaired by pollution: 80%
4. Number of fish: 3 fish
5. Height of sea level: 3 CM high
6. Was your hypothesis correct? Explain your answer.
Yes, because the ocean temperature and sea level rose due to pollution and melting glaciers. The fish had also died, so my hypothesis was correct.
7. Which human acticities modified the entire ocean system?
The waste, factory and car oil, and fertilizer polluted the ocean.
8. Which human activities modified the costal areas first?
The boat's oil and waste had polluted the coastline.
9.What happened when you made "currents" in your model.
The acids, oil, and fertilizers all mixed together.
10. How would marine life be affected by human modification of ocean systems? How would humans be affected by human modification of ocean systems?
The marine life would be harmed and killed from the oil, fertilizers, and acids. Humans wouldn't be able to fish from the ocean, as the fish population has decreased. Humans also wouldn't be able to swim as the water would be polluted.
11. Use the top of this sheet to map and label your model after human modifications. Label areas of pollution and impacts.

Reflections and Conclusions
1. On what ocean systems do you depend on? In what ways do you depend on these systems?
We depend on the fish and coral ocean systems. We need the fish for food, and we use the coral systems for tourism. We all need the ocean, for oxygen, food, or business.
2. What is one thing you can do to lessen the impacts on ocean systems?
For one thing, we could stop littering in the ocean. I could advertise that the litter is hurting the ocean, and get people to stop.
3.What are some ways the marine model could be changed to demonstrate different human impacts on ocean systems?
4.Describe some of the human activities that affect ocean systems that you had not thought about before the activity.
I really hadn't thought that fertilizers could pollute , but I guess that anything like that could harm the ocean. I didn't know that all these pollutants could get into the ocean from run-offs.
