Moon Phase Lab 12.7.11
1. Candles were once made by dipping a string, the wick, in melted wax repeatedly. Each time the candle was dipped another layer of wax was added to the candle. If waxing describes a building up or adding on, then when would the moon be waxing?
The moon would be waxing when it is getting fuller. After the new moon, the light would get larger, making the moon fuller.
2. When someone is losing weight due to an illness, it is described as waning away. If waning describes getting thinner or smaller, then when would the moon be waning?
The moon would be waning or decreasing after the full moon. It would then begin to lose its full shape.
3. A bread roll that is shaped like a C is called a crescent. When could the phase of the moon be considered a crescent?
The moon is a crescent when there is a little sliver of it left. It could be either waxing or waning.
4. When 1/2 of the moon appears lit from the Earth it is referred to as either the first or last quarter. Explain why these labels are given to the moon?
1/2 of the moon is always lit, and then we can only see half of that half. 1/2 of a 1/2 is one quarter.

The moon can be gibbous when it is either waxing or waning. That is when most of the moon is shown.
